How to Choose a Cordless Drill: The 2026 Buyer's Guide

By Utitool Editorial · April 19, 2026

Choosing the right cordless drill comes down to understanding five specs: voltage, torque, brushless vs. brushed, chuck size, and platform compatibility.

1. Voltage

Drills range from 12V (compact, installer/DIY) to 20V/18V (general purpose pro) to 36V+ (heavy-duty drilling). Most pros settle on 18V or 20V MAX.

2. Torque

Measured in inch-pounds (in-lbs) or unit watts out (UWO). Look for at least 500 in-lbs for general pro use. Over 1,000 in-lbs for concrete and structural work.

3. Brushless

Always go brushless in 2026. Longer runtime, longer tool life, smaller form factor.

4. Chuck Size

3/8" for light duty, 1/2" for pro applications.

5. Platform

If you already own batteries, stay in platform. Switching costs add up quickly.
